How to Protect Older People From the Coronavirus

People over 60, and especially over 80, are particularly vulnerable to severe or fatal infection. Here are some steps to reduce their risk. Amid the uncertainty swirling around the coronavirus pandemic stands one incontrovertible fact: The highest rate of fatalities is among older people, particularly those with underlying medical conditions. Of the confirmed cases in China to date, nearly 15 percent of patients over 80 have died. For those under 50, the death rate was well below 1 percent. There is no evidence yet that older people are significantly more likely to acquire the coronavirus than younger people. But medical experts say that if people over 60 are infected, they are more likely to have severe, life-threatening disease, even if their general health is good. Older people with und...

Almost Twice as Many Seniors Are Using Cannabis as in 2015

The number of Americans above the age of 65 who smoke weed or use cannabis edibles has almost doubled between 2015 and 2018, according to a new study published Monday. In just four years, the percentage of baby boomers using cannabis jumped from 2.4 percent to 4.2 percent in the United States.   “Our study shows cannabis use is increasingly popular nationwide among older adults,” the study’s lead author, Benjamin Han, assistant professor of Geriatric Medicine, Palliative Care and Population Health at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, told CNN.   “Consider that not even 10 years ago 0.4% of adults 65 and older said they had used marijuana in the past year, and now it’s 10 times that at 4%,” Han said.   “I find it fascinating that people who would never touch an illegal drug ar...

Cannabis & Dementia: New Study Explores Pot’s Potential for Treatment A groundbreaking study is set to begin in Australia to determine if cannabis can improve the quality of life of those suffering from dementia. By Bill Weinberg Published on October 8, 2019   In the decades since the medical marijuana movement began in earnest in the 1970s, cannabis has been anecdotally touted as an effective treatment for a variety of illnesses, including those impacting brain function, such as seizures, anxiety and depression. However, peer-reviewed research into the plant’s benefits remained stunted thanks to federal cannabis prohibition. But in recent ...

Male vs. female cannabis: How to determine the sex of your plant

In the world of plants, reproduction can happen in a variety of ways. Hermaphrodite plants grow single flowers that have both male and female reproductive organs. Monoecious plants produce two different types of flowers on the same plant. And then there are dioecious plants like cannabis, which produce either male or female reproductive organs. Because cannabis grows as either a male or female plant, we can isolate the benefits of growing females with or without male interference. Introducing both males and females will result in cross-pollination and thus seeds, which is how a breeder achieves new genetics. On the other hand, removing a male from the garden allows female plants to grow large, seedless buds (called sensimilla). The resinous buds that we consume all come from female plants....

How Marijuana Can Actually Make You An Even Better Parent Or Grandparent

It was once believed that parents and grandparents who smoked marijuana were unfit to raise their children. But now that the herb has been legalized all over the country for medicinal and recreational purposes, the narrative is changing. Many advocates argue that pot consumption in front of children is no different than kicking back a few cocktails, while others continue to apply the age-old stereotype to this debate. Somewhere in the middle of the issue is a progressive group of moms and dads who believe marijuana actually makes them better parents. But does it? Although the majority of Americans is nowhere near ready to embrace the concept of parents and grandparents using marijuana in front of their kids, it stands to reason that this is happening more frequently these days, now that ca...

From Skin Health To Mental Health, 5 Ways CBD Can Help

The cannabinoid Cannabidiol (CBD) has become such a staple in health-based communities that there are those out there that aren’t aware that CBD comes from the cannabis plant. That’s because unlike the uber famous cannabinoid THC, which accounts for much of the psychoactive effects of marijuana, CBD doesn’t alter your mind per se. It quells anxiety, offers pain relief and greatly aids in the treatment of seizure disorder, but it doesn’t get one “high.”   Here are the biggest benefits to adding CBD to your daily routine now: CBD interacts with neurotransmitters that are associated with pain and thus eases aches and even chronic pain. The neurotransmitters bind with what’s called our endocannabinoid system, the very system that not only is in place throughout our brains and bodies, but ...
