How Many Prescriptions Can Be Replaced by Cannabis?

In the US, we’ve seen a marked drop in opioid overdoses in legal states, prodding the question of whether patients are replacing their prescription medicines with cannabis. Recent survey data collected from patients enrolled in Canada’s MMPR program indicates this may be more than just a correlation. ed by researchers Philippe Lucas and Zach Walsh, this investigation surveyed 271 patients purchasing medical cannabis from Canadian LP Tilray (which, like Leafly, is owned by Privateer Holdings). Seeking to understand who is using medical marijuana and why, they discovered some staggering statistics pertaining to substitution–63% of respondents reported using cannabis in place of prescription medications. Breaking down the results by drug classes, Lucas and Walsh found that: 30% of respondents...

Why the Elderly are Turning to Marijuana for Treatment

We’ve come a long way since Nancy Reagan’s “War on Drugs” campaign. Though the messages about the perils of drug use were easily received then (at least by most), the dawning of the internet and easily-accessible information has made it more difficult to convince people to “just say no.” People want information, scientific studies and other evidence to back up claims, and they’re sharing their newly acquired knowledge with the simple click of a button. This, of course, is great news for the marijuana movement thanks to the abundance of information about cannabis and its amazing therapeutic potential. Such news is especially promising considering the recent rise in senior cannabis use because they are the demographic who can benefit from it most. In fact, there are many ways cannabis therap...

Old Dog, New Spliffs: Senior Citizens Get Schooled on Cannabis

Senior citizens make up one of the fastest-growing demographics of cannabis consumers. Unfortunately, seniors are often uneducated about the advances in marijuana over the last few decades. So instead of creating a podcast or YouTube video, a team of cannabis professionals have joined with a senior living facility to bring higher learning to its residents and other interested people. Infused-tablet company Stratos and medical-marijuana evaluation clinic Holos Health have been hosting a series of Cannabis 101 classes at Balfour Senior Living residences, traveling to the Balfour facilities in Louisville and Denver to teach senior citizens about how cannabis can help their age-related ailments. “We all know about the munchies,” Dr. Joe Cohen told the crowd as they settled in at Ba...
