Recent research has shown that feeling lonely or being isolated affects mortality in a similar way to that of a smoking habit of...

People talk about the holidays as a happy and carefree time, but the reality is, for many of us, they’re a recipe for stress. Thirty-eight percent of people in one survey said their stress increases around the holidays, citing lack of time and money, the pressure of gift exchanges, and family gatherings among the top stressors. Another survey by Healthline found that 62% of people consider the holidays stressful, with money being the biggest source of anxiety. “The holiday season is notorious for being a stressful time as consumers decorate their homes, shop for gifts, and plan travel accommodation while also handling the usual day-to-day rituals of work, family, and home management,” said Nimesh Patel, MD, co-founder and Vice Chairman of the Board of Redbird Bioscience. “Even though...

CBD: Medical “Marijuana” Without the High

Bottom Line: You don’t have to get high to get healed Now legal in 29 states, medical cannabis (aka marijuana) can treat a wide variety of ailments from cancer pain to seizures. But what if you don’t want to get high to get relief? That’s where cannabidiol (CBD), a compound derived from marijuana, comes in. Unlike its more famous cousin, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD doesn’t cause even mild euphoria…or give you the munchies. Yet CBD is the subject of some of the most exciting medical research in the field today—it has numerous potential therapeutic applications that may turn it into the next wonder drug for treating epilepsy, anxiety, Alzheimer’s and a host of other diseases and ailments. Case in point: Epidiolex, a newly developed drug (key ingredient: CBD), reduces seizures by 3...

Floyd Landis Is Now a CBD Mogul

BY BILL GIFFORD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRYAN BANDUCCI | VIDEO BY DEREK CALL Nov 13, 2019 Floyd Landis is up to his eyebrows in cannabis. Actually, higher than that: Most of the plants in this one-acre patch, rich and lushly green, stand a good foot or two taller than the former pro cyclist and disqualified Tour de France winner. On this warm Thursday in mid-September, Floyd and two colleagues are making the rounds of Amish farms in southern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, checking on their crops. The plants are the same species—Cannabis sativa—that produces the marijuana that people smoke to get high, only they are technically hemp, special strains bred for low THC content (the chemical responsible for the “high”) and high concentrations of CBD or cannabidiol, the substance used in the creams, e...

Want Extra Years of Life? Keep Blood Pressure Tightly Controlled

By Amy Norton HealthDay Reporter (HEALTHDAY) TUESDAY, Nov. 12, 2019 (HealthDay News) — Tighter control of high blood pressure may add years to people’s lives, a new study estimates. Researchers calculated that for a typical 50-year-old with high blood pressure, more aggressive treatment could translate into three extra years of life. Eighty-year-olds would have less time to gain, but it could extend their lives by an average of 10 months, the study projected. The estimates are based on a new analysis of a government-funded clinical trial called SPRINT. Back in 2015, it found that tighter blood pressure control prevented more heart attacks, strokes and deaths in people aged 50 and up, compared with standard treatment. Patients on the intensive regimen aimed to get their systolic...

What Can CBD Oil Do To Reduce Joint Pain?

While studies are limited in regards to the effect of cannabidiol (CBD) oil on joint pain, researchers have identified a clear relationship between the two. CBD may address comorbid conditions related to chronic pain, including anxiety and sleep disorders. CBD appears to inhibit or activate key compounds which influence the endocannabinoid system (ECS), including anandamide, which is associated with pain reduction. Many patients report using CBD oil to relieve symptoms of joint pain and animal models have shown positive effects, especially in relation to arthritis, however, more scientific research is needed. Joint pain affects millions of people around the world and is associated with a wide range of conditions and ailments. Some of the most common reasons for joint pain are due to muscul...

Currently, the University of Mi...

Baby Boomers Becoming New Face of Cannabis & Cannabidiol

Seventy-two-year-old Nancy Young shakes almost incessantly, a cruel symptom of the Parkinson’s disease she’s borne for decades. The Otego, New York, resident, who lives much of the time in Sutton with her daughter, Michelle Edelstein, Sutton Senior Center director, has taken prescribed opioids OxyContin and Percocet for nearly 30 years. She said it “just barely covers the pain” of her condition. Around Christmastime last year, Young decided, on the recommendation of people she met in the supermarket and eventually, her doctor, to try marijuana to ease her symptoms. She didn’t roll a joint or buy a bong. Instead, she went with her daughter to a Canna Care Docs clinic in Worcester to receive a medical marijuana certification, registered with the state and purchased some edible marijuana prod...
